Fairgate Farm is a volunteer-driven urban farm nestled within the Vita Health & Wellness District on the West Side of Stamford, Connecticut. Our mission is to provide equitable access to locally grown produce and to strengthen the community through educational and harvest related initiatives.
As we launch the 2020 growing season – the Farm’s 10 year anniversary – our mission has never been more important to the Stamford community. Although our spring volunteer hours have been suspended during this challenging time, Fairgate Farm is renewing its commitment to you by adapting its operations, while providing a full range of services, in a multitude of ways.
If you’ve recently had the opportunity to pass by the Farm, you’ll see that our spring planting is well underway. Our greenhouse is bursting with starters and summer crops, and we’ve already begun to harvest delicious, early season greens. In addition to donating food to local residents and food pantries, we’ve been offering gardening advice and vegetable seedlings, free of charge, to help build your own Healing Victory Gardens. As these individual gardens take root throughout our neighborhoods you’ll be able to provide your families and neighbors with much-needed nourishment, camaraderie and positive healing.
The spring season usually coincides with the first of Fairgate Farm’s beloved Community Classes. For 2020, we’ve moved the classes from our grapevine shrouded, outdoor classroom to the virtual space and are finding new ways to connect through regular email updates, posting current photos at the Farm, and sharing informative videos on Facebook and Instagram. Our Composting Initiative has expanded, and we’re so grateful that you continue to drop off your compostable materials to grow a sustainable community.
When can you return to the Farm? We’re now in preparations to begin welcoming volunteers and visitors back to Fairgate Farm. Our summer volunteer participation will remain somewhat limited for now, and be on a pre-scheduled basis, following CT Department of Agriculture and CDC guidelines. (Frequently check our Volunteer page for information and updates.) With the safety of our community and Farm staff foremost in mind, our Farmers Market will employ an online ordering system offering curbside pickup only. In addition, our online Farmers Market will also be a distribution point for those facing emergency food shortages.
As we begin this challenging but remarkable 10th anniversary year, Fairgate Farm is proud to have become a vital local resource for our neighborhood. We couldn’t have come this far without the essential partnerships that have sustained us. As Stamford’s premier local food system we remain dedicated to providing the support that our community needs as, together, we navigate the days ahead.
