Education

Despite being in one of the wealthiest counties in the nation, Stamford still faces many disparities in wealth, health, education, and food security among its growing population. It has been shown that when considered beyond simply providing food access, urban farms are a powerful vehicle for building essential social ties. Fairgate Farm has become a place to share skills and experiences, learn about personal health and the environment, gain knowledge to grow one’s own food and improve overall well-being and quality of life.

There is mounting evidence of how gardening and exposure to a variety of flavorful fruits and vegetables at a young age can help pave the wave for a lifetime of healthy habits. The Farm aims to create positive change through a variety of educational opportunities including educational tours, hands-on experiences, and open-to-the-public classes with a range of topics including organic gardening, composting, and healthy cooking demonstrations. During the past dozen years, countless Stamford youth and individuals of all ages have entered the gates of Fairgate Farm to discover where their food comes from, to learn about their health, and to open their minds to the wonders of our natural world.
