The Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation has awarded Stamford’s Fairgate Farm a $22,640 Healthy Food Fund grant to assist it in building volunteer participation and increasing access to healthy, locally-grown organic produce. Fairgate Farm, located at 129 Stillwater Avenue in the West Side neighborhood of Stamford, is among 25 local initiatives that received a total of $625,000 in grants to support community food programs that grow, distribute and/or market fresh food to low-income families and communities across the region. According to Vin Tufo, chief executive officer of Charter Oak Communities, “This grant will allow us to expand volunteer participation and our community building efforts with a part-time seasonal employee so that more community members may enjoy fresh, local produce and participate in Fairgate Farm’s free gardening, nutrition and cooking programs. We feel that the Farm is helping to create an important cultural shift toward healthier, productive lifestyles in Stamford’s West Side neighborhood.”
